January 20, 2012

2011 ended with a continued crackdown in Vietnam. And now, as people in Vietnam welcome the Lunar New Year, a number of families are awaiting the return of their loved ones. In honor of their continued struggle, Viet Tan releases its report: Voices of Conscience (January 2012 edition).

This document contains summaries of individuals in prison for political charges. They are university students, labor organizers, religious scholars, humble farmers—brave men and women from a cross section of backgrounds, professions and political views. Often times suffering in silence under the regime’s repressive policies, they are all part of a larger network of activists striving to change the country for the better.

Every individual profiled has made his or her views publicly known. International support, therefore, is not only desirable, but also the best guarantor for the safety of these brave individuals. Viet Tan thanks the many human rights defenders, numerous international rights organizations and activists everywhere for their continued advocacy for the many men and women imprisoned in Vietnam.

We hope this document will not only serve as documentation of the democracy movement in Vietnam but also as an advocacy tool for their immediate release.
