Rep. Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Rep. Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), and Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-4), co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Vietnam, will host a briefing with activists from Vietnam and Stanford Law School’s Allen Weiner. The briefing will highlight the Government of Vietnam’s mistreatment and unlawful detention of individuals engaged in nonviolent political and social activism.

Expert Witnesses

Mr. Allen Weiner (confirmed) is senior lecturer at Stanford Law School. An international legal scholar, Mr. Weiner won a favorable ruling from the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention contesting the illegal arrest and ongoing detention of 17 Vietnamese activists. Mr. Nguyen Van Loi (confirmed), from Tra Vinh, is the father of activist Nguyen Dang Minh Man. Ms. Minh Man is currently serving an eight year prison sentence for her photojournalism work documenting protests and civil disobedience.

Rev. Nguyen Manh Hung (confirmed) is a member of the Interfaith Council of Vietnam and pastor at the Cattle Shed Mennonite Church in Saigon.

Mr. Truong Minh Tam (invited) is a Hanoi-based activist and former political prisoner. For his advocacy, he served a 1-year prison term. During his arbitrary imprisonment, he witnessed the mistreatment of activist Dang Xuan Dieu.
